BARCLAYS CAPITAL--iPATH

Barclays' iPath notes have been among the most talked about innovation in the U.S. and a handful of firms followed with copy-cat notes this year. Led by Philippe El-Asmar's equity derivatives structuring and sales team in New York, the firm also partners with Barclays Global Investors for the distribution effort. The iPath notes have now reached over USD3 billion in market capitalization, up from USD1 billion at the end of last year.

The exchange-traded notes evolved to cover a wider range of trading strategies and asset classes this year, including the Chicago Board Options Exchange's BuyWrite Index. The firm tapped into what has become a key investment theme for retail investors this year, by launching four ETNs linked to the performance of different currencies versus the U.S. dollar. Barclays also tweaked several features of the structure to improve its appeal, including moving from weekly to daily redemption.
